Pension Sakhis to Take Retirement Security to the Doorstep of Rural India
DoRD and PFRDA partner to launch 'Pension Sakhis' leveraging SHGs, extending retirement security and financial literacy to rural households across India.
The Department of Rural Development (DoRD) and the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) signed an MoU to launch 'Pension Sakhis'.
The initiative aims to extend pension awareness and retirement security to rural households across India.
It will leverage the extensive community network of Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana–National Rural Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NRLM), including Banking Correspondent (BC) Sakhis and Self-Help Groups (SHGs).
Pension Sakhis will act as trusted community-level facilitators for pension awareness, financial literacy, enrolment, and post-enrolment support.
The program specifically targets SHG members, rural women, and Lakhpati Didis to improve adoption of pension products like the National Pension System (NPS).
The MoU was signed on 14 September 2026, marking a step towards building long-term financial security in rural India.
Detailed Insights:
The partnership addresses the fundamental challenge of limited access to formal financial advice and retirement planning services in rural areas.
It aims to build financial confidence and resilience among rural households, particularly those with irregular incomes vulnerable to economic shocks.
The initiative signifies an evolution in the role of DAY-NRLM community cadres, expanding from facilitating banking and livelihoods to fostering long-term financial security.
Digital systems, including DoRD's LoKoS system, will be utilized for monitoring outreach, enrolment, and service delivery to track progress and identify coverage gaps.
This collaboration aligns with a broader shift in the rural financial inclusion agenda, moving from mere access to financial services towards informed participation and long-term savings.
The program emphasizes building pension awareness and financial literacy on principles of honesty, transparency, and trust to enable informed choices.
