Key Highlights:

• The Mecca Joint Defence Agreement was signed on August 7, 2026, by Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and Turkey.
• The agreement proclaims a NATO-like principle of collective defence: "Any armed attack against any one of the three states shall be regarded as an attack against them all."
• It aims to boost defence cooperation, intelligence-sharing, and joint production of weaponry among the signatories.
• The pact is seen as a hedge against a changing regional order and a response to Iranian and Israeli military manoeuvres.

Detailed Insights:

• The agreement builds on the Strategic Mutual Defence Agreement signed between Saudi Arabia and Pakistan on September 17, 2025.
• The pact combines Saudi Arabia's economic power, Pakistan's nuclear capability and military prowess, and Turkey's large military and defence technology.
• It is not considered a true NATO-style alliance due to a lack of shared threat and complex regional relationships.
• Saudi Arabia seeks to assert its leadership in West Asia and respond to perceived American unpredictability in the region.
• Pakistan aims to deepen its integration into the emerging security architecture and potentially check India militarily.
• Turkey advances its ambition to play a larger security role in West Asia and has historically supported Pakistan on Kashmir.
• The US-Saudi civil nuclear agreement, a Section 123 Agreement, was signed on July 22, 2026, allowing US firms to build civilian nuclear reactors in Saudi Arabia.
• India is closely following the development and needs to cultivate stronger ties with regional countries and deepen economic and strategic engagement.
