Union Environment Minister Leads International Vulture Awareness Day 2026 Celebrations and Inaugurates National Workshop Themed ‘From Crisis to Recovery – Conserving India’s Vultures’, at Panchkula
Union Environment Minister leads International Vulture Awareness Day 2026, inaugurating a national workshop on vulture conservation and recovery efforts in Panchkula.
International Vulture Awareness Day 2026 was celebrated in Panchkula, Haryana.
Union Environment Minister Shri Bhupender Yadav inaugurated a national workshop themed ‘From Crisis to Recovery – Conserving India’s Vultures’.
The event highlighted India's comprehensive efforts in vulture conservation, including the role of the Jatayu Conservation Breeding Centre (JCBC), Pinjore.
JCBC Pinjore successfully bred 35 chicks and contributed 87 vultures for reintroduction in 2025-26.
A coffee table book, 'Story of Jatayu: Saving India's Vulture', was released during the event.
Detailed Insights:
The workshop was a collaborative effort by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), Central Zoo Authority (CZA), Haryana Forest & Wildlife Department, and Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS).
India is home to nine species of vultures, both resident and migratory, including White-rumped, Long-billed, and Slender-billed Vultures.
Vulture populations declined significantly since the 1990s, primarily due to veterinary painkillers and disruption in their food chain.
The government emphasizes a holistic, ecosystem-oriented conservation model and a 'Whole of Government' and 'Whole of Society' approach for conservation.
Conservation efforts focus on creating Vulture Safe Zones, promoting vulture-safe veterinary practices, and ensuring safe food availability.
JCBC Pinjore is a key center for conservation breeding, scientific husbandry, and capacity building for White-rumped, Long-billed, and Slender-billed Vultures.
Key Concepts Involved:
Vulture Safe Zones: Areas where the veterinary use of harmful drugs like Diclofenac is eliminated to protect vulture populations.
Conservation Breeding: Rearing endangered species in controlled environments to increase their population for eventual reintroduction into the wild.
Ecological Scavengers: Organisms that feed on dead animals, playing a crucial role in nutrient recycling and maintaining ecosystem health.
