Union Cabinet Clears Two-Year Service Extension For Agniveers, Opens Path To Regular Service, Pg1
Union Cabinet approves two-year service extension for Agniveers, creating a pathway for all to join regular armed forces based on performance and selection criteria.
The Union Cabinet has approved a two-year service extension for a section of Agniveers, creating a pathway for all cadets to join regular service.
Under the revised Agnipath scheme, the 25% of Agniveers initially retained will continue, while the remaining 75% will receive an additional two-year engagement.
After this extended period, these Agniveers will be eligible for consideration for enrolment as regular soldiers, subject to selection criteria.
The extended engagement includes higher remuneration, an enhanced Seva Nidhi package, and seniority benefits.
This decision follows a positive performance assessment of Agniveers by the three services, highlighting their skills, motivation, and physical fitness.

Detailed Insights:
The original Agnipath scheme, launched on June 14, 2022, recruited soldiers below officer rank for a four-year tenure.
Previously, only up to 25% of each batch of Agniveers were eligible for retention in the regular cadre after four years.
The enhanced Seva Nidhi package for the extended period will see the government's contribution increase from 30% to 70% of the individual's contribution.
The first batch of Agniveers is nearing the completion of their initial four-year service term, prompting this review and revision.
This overhaul aims to align the aspirations of Agniveers with the operational requirements and organisational efficiency of the armed forces.
The scheme was initially introduced to create a younger fighting force and reduce long-term salary and pension liabilities.
